Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo (UMPWR) — Through the Muhammadiyah Student Association Commission Board (PK IMM) AR Fachruddin, UMPWR organized a public discussion titled “Measuring the Urgency of the Board of Peace: Between Institutional Formality and Real Conflict Solutions.” This activity is part of the Follow-Up Action Plan (RTL) program, aimed at critically examining the role of the Board of Peace (BoP) as a global peace institution.
The discussion was held on Sunday, April 5, 2026, at the Seminar Room of the East Campus of UMPWR. It was attended by RTL participants, commission board members, and representatives of both internal and external student organizations, including HIMA, ORTOM, UKM, KOORKOM, and PC IMM Purworejo.
The chairperson of the organizing committee, IMMawati Seikha Najla, expressed appreciation for the participants’ involvement and hoped that the forum would serve as a starting point for a collective student movement in addressing global peace issues. Remarks were also delivered by the commission leadership and the Coordinator of IMM UM Purworejo, emphasizing the important role of students as agents of change in responding to global dynamics.
The event featured Riko Ardi Viantoro, S.Pd., as the keynote speaker. In his presentation, he elaborated on the fundamental concept of the Board of Peace, which ideally functions to prevent conflicts, uphold justice, and act as a neutral mediator in maintaining global stability.
However, the reality shows a gap between these ideals and actual practices. Institutional imbalance and the dominance of major powers were highlighted as factors affecting the effectiveness of the BoP in resolving conflicts, including those in Palestine.
Furthermore, the speaker explored conflict dynamics from historical and decolonization perspectives, encouraging participants to critically understand the complexity of global issues. Several reflective questions were raised, including the neutrality of global peace institutions, the effectiveness of international forums, and the strategic role of students and Indonesia in promoting world peace.
Through this activity, UMPWR students are expected not only to gain academic insights but also to develop critical awareness and a strong commitment to advocating for global peace, upholding justice, and actively contributing to humanitarian efforts.
