Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo is the only university level college in Purworejo. In accordance with the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Number 05/D/0/1999 dated January 8 1999, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo officially became a university level after previously being at the institute level. Based on data from the 4ICU Institute in 2018, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo is ranked 8th among all Muhammadiyah Universities in Indonesia. A year later, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo became the Muhammadiyah university that sent the most students to the National Student Science Week (PIMNAS).
