Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo (UMPWR) - in celebration of its 61st anniversary, a new initiative was launched in the form of a Poetry Creation Competition, which was enlivened by participants from various countries, including Russia. English Language Education students had the opportunity to interview the four winners. Klimova Ekaterina, a student from Novosibirsk State Pedagogical University, Russia, and the first-place winner, focused on the theme of love and compassion in human relationships. For her, love is the most powerful thing in the world," she said confidently. A parent's love for their child will nurture a gentle, compassionate character, free from hatred. “Teach our lovely child what to say and what to do, let them learn to stand and face this journey to a lovely place, and teach them love, not to hate.” This verse reflects the message she wants to spread, that love is an important pillar that influences human character and world peace.
Moving on to the second winner, Bolshakov David Kirillovich, an English major, with a poem titled The Only Animal Who Hates, raised a theme that could be considered quite heavy, because the poem raised the theme of reflecting on the dualistic nature of humans.
“I want to convey a sense of reflection on the dualistic nature of humans. I hope the audience can understand what I want to say, and I hope I have succeeded in doing so,” said David, who then closed with a sweet smile on his face. In this case, David invites listeners to reflect on the complexity and contradictions that reside within humans.
In third place, Daria Zavarikina delivered sincere words from the heart that had an unexpected impact. She admitted to feeling both happy and surprised. These expressions showed her sincerity and humility as a young writer. Closing the interview, she gave a message to young writers and literature lovers:
"Don't be afraid to share your thoughts and reveal what's inside of you. Criticism will always exist — learn from it, and never be ashamed of your voice.”
Verma Vishakha, who also ranked third, is an international student from India who is currently completing her studies at the same university, Novosibirsk State Pedagogical University, Russia. With this poem, she expresses the frustration that arises within us, “don't defeat the sympathy we have,” she said wisely. Vishakha, who is also a fan of tempeh, hopes to visit Indonesia one day.
