Standing proudly on the graduation stage of Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo (UMPWR), Helena Setya Putri from the Civil Engineering Study Program shared more than just words of gratitude — she shared a story of inclusivity, respect, and harmony.
Helena is one of three non-Muslim graduates in the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Graduation Ceremony, Period I, Academic Year 2025/2026. In her heartfelt message, she reflected on her meaningful journey as a Catholic student studying at a university grounded in Islamic values.
“At first, I was worried — would I, a non-Muslim student, truly be accepted in an Islamic university? But that worry slowly turned into pride. UMPWR is not only a place to gain knowledge, but also a place where I learned the true meaning of humanity and togetherness,” Helena shared.
Supported by her family and warmly welcomed by lecturers and fellow students, Helena described how her initial concerns faded as she experienced the open and inclusive spirit of the campus. Even courses such as Al-Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan (AIK) became eye-opening experiences for her.
“I took AIK not as a religious obligation but as a new insight. Through it, I learned that Islam is truly a blessing for the universe (rahmatan lil ‘alamin). We studied, discussed, and worked together without any religious barriers,” she said.
Helena expressed her deep appreciation for the lecturers and academic community who treated all students with professionalism, kindness, and equality.
“UMPWR has proven that academic excellence goes beyond identity. We are evaluated based on our intelligence, hard work, and integrity,” she emphasized.
Closing her message, Helena called on all graduates to uphold tolerance and become agents of positive change in society.
“This university has shown Indonesia — and the world — that a faith-based institution can be a safe and welcoming home for everyone. Let us carry this spirit of inclusivity wherever we go,” she concluded.
