Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo (UMPWR) - The English Education Study Programme, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, held an Outcome-Based Education (OBE) Curriculum Development Workshop as part of efforts to strengthen the quality and relevance of higher education curricula. The event took place on Tuesday, 29 July 2025, in the Main Meeting Room of UMPWR, featuring expert speaker Dyah Setyowati Ciptaningrum, S.Pd., M.Ed., Ed.D., an English language education expert and OBE curriculum developer from Yogyakarta State University (UNY).
The workshop took place in an interactive and constructive atmosphere, attended by lecturers from the English Language Education Program, alumni representatives, and representatives of elementary, middle, high school, and special education school teachers in Purworejo District. The activity aimed to develop and revise the curriculum to align with the OBE approach, which emphasises graduate learning outcomes, relevance to industry and community needs, and the strengthening of competency-based learning.
In his speech, the Head of the PBI Study Programme, Andrian Nuriza Johan, SS., M.Pd., stated that a good curriculum will have a positive impact on the quality of graduates and the relevance of the study programme to the needs of the world of work. The curriculum must be continuously updated to align with contemporary developments. At present, a curriculum aligned with contemporary developments is one based on Outcome-Based Education (OBE). In light of this, the PBI programme must revise its curriculum to adopt an OBE-based approach.
In her presentation, Dyah Setyowati Ciptaningrum emphasised the importance of OBE as an educational approach that places students at the centre of learning and focuses on tangible outcomes. “OBE helps study programmes systematically design, implement, and evaluate curricula so that graduates possess competencies aligned with contemporary needs,” she explained.
This activity is expected to serve as a strategic first step for the English Language Education Program at UMPWR in enhancing the quality of education, program accreditation, and graduates’ readiness to face the global job market. Through this workshop, the English Language Education Program at UMPWR demonstrates a strong commitment to providing excellent, adaptive, and relevant education that aligns with academic advancements and societal needs.
