Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo (UMPWR) — Dr. R. Wakhid Akhdinirwanto, M.Si., a lecturer in the Physics Education Program at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), served as a speaker at the Technical Guidance (Bimtek) Workshop on Enhancing the Competencies of the Social Studies Teachers' Association (MGMP) for Junior High Schools across Kulon Progo District. This active and enthusiastic event focused on the theme ‘Developing Lesson Plans (RPP) Using the Deep Learning Approach.’ The event was organised by the Kulon Progo District Education, Youth, and Sports Office from 22–24 July 2025 at SMP Negeri 1 Wates.
The workshop, attended by the Chairperson of the MGMP IPS for junior high schools and IPS teachers from across Kulon Progo District, aimed to enhance the capacity of IPS teachers in designing more meaningful, contextual, and challenging learning experiences aligned with 21st-century needs, while also preparing for the implementation of the Deep Learning approach. During the event, Dr. Wakhid presented theories on lesson planning, practical lesson planning, discussions, and reflections. Dr. Wakhid emphasised the importance of shifting the paradigm from information-based learning to learning that emphasises deep understanding, critical thinking skills, and collaboration among students.
Deep learning lesson plans are a logical consequence of social change. Dr. Wakhid explains that students must be able to explain the meaning of social change as a process of change that occurs in the structure and function of society that affects the mindset, attitudes, and behaviour of individuals and groups. Students must also be able to describe the forms of social change, whether small or large, rapid or slow, and desired or undesired.
In addition to the presentation of the material, participants also had the opportunity to practise developing deep learning-based lesson plans in accordance with the characteristics of the social studies subject and the profiles of students at their respective schools. This activity was well received by the teachers in attendance. They felt assisted by new insights in developing more innovative and adaptive learning tools in line with the times.
With this activity, it is hoped that IPS teachers in Kulon Progo District can become agents of change in their respective schools, delivering education that is not merely about knowledge transfer but also shapes students' critical, reflective, and contextual thinking and attitudes. (akb/KP).
