UMPWR PBI Study Programme Holds Guest Lecture on "Cross Cultural Understanding"

Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo (UMPWR) - English Language Education Study Programme held a joint lecture with Yogyakarta State University (UNY) entitled ‘Guest Lecturing: Cross Cultural Understanding’ on Friday, 15 November 2024 in the Main Meeting Room. TheGuest Lecture was presented by Prof. Dr. Margana, M.Hum., M.A. (Vice Rector of UNY for Research, Cooperation, Information Systems and Business), and Dr. Siti Mukminatun, M.Hum. (Lecturer of English Education UNY).

The Guest Lecture participants were 41 students of English Language Education Study Program in semester 7. Also present were Vice Rector IV of UMPWR, Dr. Tusino, M.Pd.,B.I., Vice Dean of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Herlina Setyowati, M.Pd., and Lecturer of English Language Education Study Program in Intercultural Communication, Dr. Titi Rokhayati, M.Pd.

In his speech, Vice Rector IV UMPWR, Dr. Tusino, M.Pd.B.I., said that the purpose of this Guest Lecture was to strengthen the understanding of UMPWR PBI Study Program students about the urgency of English and cultural diversity or called ‘cross cultural understanding’.

Prof. Dr Margana, M.Hum., M.A., gave material about Blended Culture. Prof Margana said the importance of ‘Blended Culture’ knowledge for language learners. ‘Being a student, especially a language learner, we must have an open mind (tolerance), both intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. The goal is that there are more things that we can explore and get from the culture of other countries,’ he explained.

The second material was delivered by Dr Siti Mukminatun, M.Hum who delivered about ‘Intercultural Awareness’. Dr. Siti Mukminatun, M.Hum, conveyed the importance of understanding and recognising the culture of other countries. ‘So, as language learners, we do not only focus on improving our vocabulary, grammar, and so on, but we also need to understand the culture so that we get to know the country we are studying’, she explained.

Dr. Titi Rokhayati, M.Pd. as the lecturer of the Intercultural Communication course also said that this Guest Lecture was held as a place to broaden students' insights and strengthen academic cooperation with other universities, especially UNY. (Akbar/KP)
