Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo (UMPWR) – The melodious calls to prayer and recitations of the Holy Qur’an added a special atmosphere to the 62nd anniversary celebrations of Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo (UMPWR). As part of the celebrations, the university’s Jam’iyyatul Qurro wal Huffadz (JQH) Student Activity Unit organized an Adhan Competition and a Musabaqah Tilawatil Qur’an (MTQ) competition in the Qur’an recitation category on Saturday, October 10, 2026.

Held in the Seminar Room at UMPWR’s East Campus, the event provided students with an opportunity to showcase their Islamic talents. Beyond the competition itself, it also encouraged them to strengthen Islamic brotherhood (ukhuwah Islamiyah) and promote Islamic values across the campus community.

18 Students Take Part in the Adhan and Qur’an Recitation Competitions

Carrying the theme “Islamic Harmony: Fostering Brotherhood and Artistic Creativity Through the Recitation of Divine Revelation and the Message of Islam,” the event attracted 18 students from the first, third, fifth, and seventh semesters.

Of the participants, 10 competed in the Adhan Competition, while the remaining eight took part in the MTQ Qur’an recitation category. Both competitions offered students an opportunity to develop their abilities while building confidence and preparing themselves for future competitions.

The event was officially opened by UMPWR Vice Rector IV for Al-Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan (AIK), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tusino, M.Pd.B.I., representing the Rector of UMPWR.

A First Step Toward Greater Achievements

In his remarks, Dr. Tusino expressed his hope that the Adhan and MTQ competitions would continue to grow and attract more participants in the coming years. With broader student participation, UMPWR hopes to discover more talented students whose abilities can be nurtured to compete at higher levels.

He also expressed the hope that the event could serve as a golden ticket—an initial stepping stone for students to pursue opportunities in other competitions. More than just a contest, he noted, the event provides an opportunity to strengthen bonds among students and promote Islamic values within the university environment.

Identifying Talent for Higher-Level Competitions

Meanwhile, Nasrudin, M.S.I., Chair of LP3AK and Coordinator of the Sports and Arts Section of the UMPWR 62nd Anniversary Organizing Committee, explained that the Adhan and MTQ competitions were part of this year’s anniversary celebrations.

He emphasized that the activities were not solely intended to provide students with a competitive platform. They also served as a means of identifying promising talent that could be further developed and prepared to participate in competitions organized at the Ministry of Religious Affairs level.

In particular, the Adhan Competition is expected to identify students with the ability and potential to serve as muezzins at the university mosque. Through this initiative, UMPWR aims to continue developing students’ religious talents while strengthening Islamic life on campus.

Strengthening Character and Islamic Values on Campus

Through the Adhan and MTQ competitions, UMPWR’s 62nd anniversary serves not only as an opportunity to celebrate the university’s journey, but also as a platform for students to grow, achieve their potential, and strengthen bonds of brotherhood.

The harmony created through the calls to prayer and recitations of the Holy Qur’an reflects UMPWR’s ongoing efforts to build a campus environment that promotes not only academic excellence but also character development and the strengthening of Islamic values.
