Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo (UMPWR) – The long journey of Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo (UMPWR) is entering its 62nd year. Established on September 24, 1964, UMPWR will celebrate its 62nd anniversary on September 24, 2026. This year, the anniversary celebration carries the theme “Tumbuh, Tangguh, Berpengaruh” (Growing, Resilient, and Making an Impact).
The theme reflects UMPWR’s ongoing journey to move forward and adapt to the changing times. Growth is not only about age and achievements, but also about improving quality. Resilience means being able to face changes and challenges in higher education. Meanwhile, making an impact reflects UMPWR’s commitment to expanding its contribution to society.
The 62nd anniversary celebration will go beyond ceremonial activities. A variety of events have been prepared and will take place in stages from August through November 2026. The program includes sports activities, creative and academic competitions, social initiatives, and various contests involving students, lecturers and education staff, teachers, school students, as well as the wider community.
The series of activities will begin with the UMPWR Men’s Volleyball Tournament for Lecturers and Education Staff between Buildings on August 17, 2026. The celebration will continue with the Poetry and Short Story Writing Competition for Senior High School/Vocational High School/Islamic Senior High School Students across the Kedu Residency, the National-Level Business Plan Competition for University Students, and the UMPWR Student Creative Video Competition, all of which will begin on August 18.
The UMPWR community will also strengthen its sense of togetherness through the UMPWR Lecturers and Education Staff Badminton Competition on August 28 and the UMPWR Men’s Lecturers and Education Staff Table Tennis Competition on September 4.
Beyond competitions, the anniversary celebration also provides an opportunity for UMPWR to share and engage more closely with the community. The Taaruf Parade and Social Service Activity are scheduled for September 18, 2026. Around the same period, the Digital Learning Media Competition for Elementary, Junior High, and Senior High School Teachers across the Kedu Residency will also take place from September 1 to October 15, 2026.
On September 24, 2026, the series of activities will reach one of its main highlights, the 62nd UMPWR Anniversary Reception. The occasion will serve as a moment to express gratitude for UMPWR’s journey while reaffirming its commitment to continuing to move forward.

UMPWR Rector, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Teguh Wibowo, M.Pd., said that turning 62 is not merely about reaching another milestone, but also provides an opportunity to reflect on the journey that has been taken and prepare for the next chapter.
“Sixty-two years is a long journey. Certainly, there are many achievements for which we should be grateful, but there is also still much work to continue. Therefore, we see the 62nd anniversary as a momentum to keep growing, become more resilient in facing change, and strengthen our positive impact on society,” Teguh said.
According to him, this spirit should belong to the entire UMPWR community. The university’s progress, he added, is built not only through academic achievements, but also through togetherness, creativity, accomplishments, social awareness, and meaningful contributions to society.
“An anniversary is not simply about celebrating another year. More importantly, each additional year should bring new spirit and improved quality. We want UMPWR to continue growing, remain resilient, and provide greater benefits to society,” he added.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the 62nd UMPWR Anniversary Committee, Dr. Arif Maftukin, M.Pd., said that the series of activities had been designed so that the spirit of the anniversary could be experienced by people from different backgrounds.
“We want the 62nd anniversary to be a celebration that everyone can feel a part of. That is why the activities are not only intended for the UMPWR community, but also involve teachers, school students, university students from various regions, and the wider community. There are competitions, sports activities, social initiatives, and opportunities for people to create and express their ideas,” Arif explained.
He added that several activities would continue even after the anniversary reception. Following September 24, the program will continue with the Inter-Study Program and Unit Tumpeng Decoration Competition at UMPWR, Blood Donation, and the Adhan and MTQ Competition among UMPWR Students.
The celebration will continue throughout October with the Men’s and Women’s Volleyball Competition for Senior High School/Vocational High School/Islamic Senior High School Students across the Kedu Residency, the Rebana Competition for Senior High School/Vocational High School/Islamic Senior High School Students across Purworejo Regency, and the U-40 Inter-Institution Football Tournament across Purworejo Regency. The series will conclude with the Archery Competition for Senior High School/Vocational High School/Islamic Senior High School Students across Purworejo Regency on November 14–15, 2026.
“We hope that the entire series will not only make the 62nd anniversary more vibrant, but also strengthen relationships within the academic community and between UMPWR and society. We hope every activity carries value and leaves a positive impression,” Arif said.
For UMPWR, 62 years represents a journey built by generations of people. From one period to the next, the spirit of service continues to be passed on. Today, that spirit is once again reaffirmed through the theme “Tumbuh, Tangguh, Berpengaruh” (Growing, Resilient, and Making an Impact).
