Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo (UMPWR) – A solemn atmosphere marked the commemoration of the 81st Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia at Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo (UMPWR). The flag-raising ceremony was held on Monday, August 17, 2026, at the West Campus Field and was attended by the entire UMPWR academic community.
UMPWR Rector, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Teguh Wibowo, M.Pd., served as the ceremony’s master of ceremonies and delivered the official address from the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Brian Yuliarto, for the 81st Anniversary of Indonesian Independence.
In his address, the Minister emphasized that independence is not merely a historical legacy, but a responsibility that must continue to be fulfilled through hard work and meaningful contributions. Higher education institutions, he said, have an important role in this effort because campuses are places where knowledge is developed, technology is created, and the nation’s future generations are prepared.
Universities are also encouraged not to remain mere spectators in the nation’s development. Instead, they are expected to contribute through clear thinking, constructive criticism, outstanding talent, as well as research and technology that respond to the needs of society. Research, the Minister stressed, should not stop at reports or publications, but should move forward into prototypes, patents, products, and solutions that can be used by the wider community.
This message is highly relevant to the UMPWR academic community as the university continues to strengthen its contribution through education, research, innovation, and community service. The Minister also highlighted the importance of collaboration among universities, government, industry, research institutions, local governments, and communities in advancing Indonesia.

The commemoration at UMPWR did not end with the flag ceremony. On the same occasion, the Rector officially opened the series of activities marking the 62nd Anniversary (Milad) of UMPWR.
The opening marked the beginning of a series of anniversary programs that will bring together various activities as part of UMPWR’s ongoing journey in advancing higher education and contributing to society.
The commemoration of Indonesia’s Independence Day and the opening of UMPWR’s 62nd Anniversary celebrations also served as an opportunity to reaffirm the spirit of togetherness across the university community. The spirit of independence is expected not only to be reflected in the ceremony itself, but also in the daily work, innovation, and meaningful contributions carried out within the campus.
With this spirit, UMPWR continues to move forward—not only to produce outstanding graduates, but also to prepare a generation capable of making a meaningful contribution to society, the nation, and the country.
