Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo (UMPWR) – The ability to speak confidently in public is needed not only in educational settings but also plays an important role in supporting professionalism within the police force. This was one of the topics discussed during a Public Speaking session held at the Purworejo Police Department on Thursday (August 13, 2026).
Held at the Tribrata Auditorium of the Purworejo Police Department, the session featured Dr. Umi Faizah, M.Pd., Head of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education (PBSI) Study Program at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) UMPWR, as the speaker.
Dr. Umi Faizah brought her expertise in language and communication to the session, particularly in discussing how to deliver messages clearly, confidently, and in a way that is easy for audiences to understand.
According to her, public speaking is not simply about the ability to speak in front of a large audience. More importantly, it involves how a person manages a message, chooses the right language, builds confidence, and understands the audience they are communicating with.
Through the session, participants were encouraged not only to understand the theory but also to view public speaking as a skill that requires continuous practice. Opening a conversation, delivering ideas, using body language, and building interaction with an audience are all essential elements of effective communication in public settings.
For UMPWR, the involvement of lecturers in activities outside campus is part of the university's contribution to society and various institutions. The knowledge and expertise possessed by lecturers should not remain confined to the classroom but can also be shared through various forums that seek to strengthen human resource capacity.
The activity also highlighted the role of FKIP UMPWR in developing communication competencies that are relevant to the needs of society and the professional world. Through the expertise of its lecturers, UMPWR continues to create opportunities for collaboration with various institutions, including government agencies and the police.
With her experience and expertise, Dr. Umi Faizah is expected to continue contributing to various initiatives aimed at developing communication skills while strengthening UMPWR's role as a higher education institution that is actively present and provides meaningful contributions to society.
