Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo (UMPWR) has achieved another significant milestone in the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities – July 2026 Edition. The university was ranked 4th among Muhammadiyah and 'Aisyiyah Higher Education Institutions (PTMA) in Central Java and 10th among all private universities in Central Java. Within the former Kedu Residency, UMPWR continues to maintain its position as the highest-ranked private university.
This achievement reaffirms UMPWR's consistent commitment to strengthening the quality of the three pillars of higher education (education, research, and community service), enhancing research productivity, and expanding its academic visibility at both the national and international levels through various digital platforms.
According to the latest Webometrics results, the Top Five Muhammadiyah and 'Aisyiyah Universities (PTMA) in Central Java are Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS), Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto (UMP), Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang (Unimus), Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo (UMPWR), and Universitas Muhammadiyah Magelang (Unimma).
Meanwhile, among all private universities in Central Java, UMPWR secured a place in the Top 10, alongside Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS), Satya Wacana Christian University (UKSW), Sultan Agung Islamic University (Unissula), PGRI University Semarang, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto (UMP), Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang (Unimus), Universitas Semarang (USM), Muria Kudus University (UMK), Dian Nuswantoro University (Udinus), and Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo (UMPWR).
UMPWR Rector, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Teguh Wibowo, M.Pd., stated that this accomplishment is the result of the collective efforts of the entire university community in fostering a culture of academic excellence while strengthening UMPWR's digital presence. He emphasized that the ranking serves as a motivation for the university to continue improving its performance and achieve even better results in future editions.
"This ranking serves as a strong motivation for us to continuously improve in various areas, including scientific publications, citations, research collaborations, institutional website management, and the global visibility of UMPWR's academic outputs. Through consistent and sustainable efforts, we hope to achieve a higher position in the next Webometrics ranking while further strengthening UMPWR's reputation as a competitive and high-quality university," he said.
According to Webometrics, its ranking methodology is continuously refined to improve the accuracy and integrity of the results. The rankings primarily reflect an institution's academic output and are therefore influenced by the size of the university. In addition, Webometrics does not categorize institutions by type, such as research universities or community colleges.
The ranking evaluates several key aspects, including research impact and scholarly excellence, academic openness and visibility, digital engagement and third-party references, as well as overall institutional performance in education, research, and community service. On the other hand, it does not assess website design, user experience, website traffic, or marketing and advertising activities.
For the July 2026 edition, Webometrics employed three main indicators. Visibility (50%) measures institutional impact based on the number of external referring domains using data from Ahrefs. Excellence (40%) evaluates the number of high-quality research papers ranked among the world's top 10% most cited publications. Transparency/Openness (10%) measures citations received by the institution's leading researchers based on their Google Scholar profiles.
This achievement serves as further motivation for UMPWR to continue strengthening institutional governance, fostering a robust research culture, expanding academic collaborations, and increasing the global visibility of its scholarly work. Guided by its commitment to excellence and continuous progress, UMPWR remains dedicated to delivering high-quality higher education while making meaningful contributions to society, the nation, and the global academic community.
