Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo (UMPWR) has once again achieved a significant milestone in research and innovation. The achievement was earned by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jeki Mediantari Wahyu Wibawanti, S.Pt., M.Eng., M.Si., a lecturer in the Animal Husbandry Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, who successfully obtained a Granted Simple Patent from the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI), Ministry of Law of the Republic of Indonesia.
The patent, titled “Method for Producing Synbiotic Goat Milk Yogurt with Prebiotics Derived from Mangrove Apple Extract (Sonneratia caseolaris)”, bears patent number S00202210679. This patent represents one of the key outputs of Dr. Jeki’s doctoral dissertation research, completed in 2022 in the Doctoral Program of Animal Science at the Faculty of Animal and Agricultural Sciences, Diponegoro University. The research was funded through the Domestic Postgraduate Education Scholarship (BPPDN) provided by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology.
This achievement is the result of close collaboration between Dr. Jeki Wibawanti and her doctoral supervisory team at Diponegoro University, who also served as the patent inventors. The team consisted of Prof. Dr. Ir. Anang M. Legowo, M.Sc., Ph.D. as the Principal Supervisor, Dr. Sri Mulyani, S.Pt., M.P. and Ir. Rudi Hartanto, S.Pt., M.P., Ph.D., IPM. as Co-Supervisors, with additional support from Ahmad Ni’matullah Al-Baari, S.Pt., M.P., Ph.D. and Prof. Dr. Ir. Yoyok Budi Pramono, S.Pt., M.P., IPM. as members of the inventor team.
Notably, the patent application process began in 2022 and, after undergoing administrative and substantive examinations for approximately four years, was officially granted in 2026. This accomplishment demonstrates that academic research can generate innovations with significant novelty and intellectual property value.
In addition to the granted patent, the dissertation research also produced four Scopus-indexed scientific publications as outputs of four research grant programs funded by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology and Diponegoro University in collaboration with the supervisory team. These achievements further strengthen the contribution of the research to the advancement of science and technology, particularly in the field of functional foods based on livestock products. The patent complements the overall academic outputs of the research, which not only contributed to international scientific publications but also generated innovations with strong potential for commercialization and public utilization.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Teguh Wibowo, Rector of Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo, expressed his appreciation for the achievement and hoped that it would inspire both lecturers and students to continue producing innovative, high-quality research with tangible benefits for society.
Dr. Jeki Wibawanti stated that the achievement was made possible through dedication, collaboration, and support from her supervisory team, UMPWR, the Faculty of Animal and Agricultural Sciences of Diponegoro University, the Mangrove Institute, and all parties involved in the research. According to her, the patent is not only recognition of the novelty of the research findings but also opens opportunities for developing functional beverage products based on Indonesia’s local resources that offer both economic value and health benefits.
The research highlights the local potential of Peranakan Etawa goat milk from Kaligesing, Purworejo, through the development of a synbiotic yogurt production method utilizing inulin extracted from mangrove apple (Sonneratia caseolaris) as a natural prebiotic source. The innovation combines the probiotic benefits of Lactobacillus plantarum with prebiotics to create a high-value functional food product with promising health-supporting properties.
The successful acquisition of this Granted Simple Patent serves as tangible evidence of UMPWR’s commitment to promoting excellence in research, innovation, and the downstream implementation of research outcomes for the advancement of science and technology while delivering meaningful benefits to society.
